Does twitter survive on porn – or worse….

This is not one of my typical posts. I found it troubling to write about. Ultimately I felt that I should – not because I have many followers or anything, but simply because it needs to be said and maybe somebody will read this and maybe some good can from it.

Like many parents I got on twitter like I did facebook – to creep on my kids of course. But along the way, I found it a great way to streamline the information I wanted: from daily verses, to business, to fly-fishing and football, etc. And of course, I could creep on the kids so win-win.

Now everyone knows that porn has dominated the web since before most of us even did more than send email. Now maybe I was naive or just didn’t go looking for it but maybe a year ago – i started to see it all over. And no, I wasn’t looking for it. It came in the form of a misspelling here and there. It came from followers who would send messages to their site. And while i just deleted or blocked and ignored: it became so apparent that it was everywhere, and I wondered why people can have their accounts closed for giving their opinion but twitter doesn’t seem to care how much porn is on there from what I can see. You’d think thats not the platform they want……unless it is what they want or they are just benefitting too much from it to do anything about it.

So now and then a quick google to look for analytics on twitter: what percent of traffic to and from twitter came from the porn industry. I still don’t know. Maybe i would have if I was reporter, or fbi – but since I’m not – I didn’t. Some stock analyst could find out – maybe they don’t care either.

10 plus years have passed and I can say without question, it has grown. Women i initially followed have changed careers/or hobbies and use twitter as a marketing platform for their private sites, or their “not porn but kinda” with pictures etc if someone pays a fee. And then of course, just accounts that post it right in the open. Among the disturbing things, any young kid can find this if they want to – kids too young to have any business doing so.

You can’t have free speech and write what you want on twitter without possibly getting warned, but any sort of sex you can imagine and some u wouldn’t want to – feel free as twitter clearly doesn’t worry about that.

i have seen accounts promoting “young girls” available – even in my small city. I have seen accounts that show more rape imo than anything. You have to think that trafficking via sex/rape is going on via a public company’s platform, and little attention is given to it. I have blocked, I have reported, and nothing. nothing except blocked callers threatening me via text.

Ok u ask – why did u look? why did u spend time on this? Etc. the answer is simply because it was that evident even though I spent very little time on it. I spent more time looking for analytics on the subject than the subject itself. i gave up on that but hope some reporter finds a web traffic expert and proves what my gut says: without that traffic, twitters stock price would be reflected accordingly. But you have to think this hasn’t escaped the FBI’s attention. They took down some big name sites – all of which used twitter. But on a local level – I doubt the manpower exists to go after every page promoting their “young girls arriving get ur massage here” in every corner of the usa. But I think thats what its gonna take – local law enforcement doing some homework, sharing with other cities until one of them connects these to “bigger things” like human trafficking, and drug distribution.

I hated writing about this. But hopefully some good will come of it.

And because I know twitter has lawyer after lawyer – I have no idea what steps twitter takes in these areas. All I wrote was my opinion based upon my observations.

I won’t be quitting twitter but i have certainly taken steps to take more care in who i “follow back”, adjusting settings, etc. Scripture says “flee from sexual immorality”. Flee = run and I think used purposely – it’s too tempting too many and in times of trial, some tempted that might not be, so God, recognizing this, made it simple for us – run from it. But that doesn’t mean we can’t speak up about the dangers to kids, or possible women in forced situations – in those situations, we must speak up, we must report and hopefully twitter will be a leader in that arena. And maybe, I won’t be blocked by twitter for saying my peace. As i’d really like to the twitter I love:scripture, football, fly-fishing, business, and of course – creeping on my kids. #prayersfromdad
